A47 North Tuddenham – Hard Closure
There will be a hard closure of the A47 between Wood Lane Junction and Longwater Interchange on the eastbound carriageway only from 11pm Saturday 24 October to 6am Monday 26 October. Access to Mattishall Lane from Honingham roundabout will also be restricted.
The closure is being implemented in coordination with National Highways, Norfolk County Council, and Norfolk Constabulary. This section of the A47 will be closed due to the ongoing roadworks, as it will not be safe to allow our movements through the area alongside normal traffic.
A signed strategic diversion route will be in place for the duration of the closure. Please follow the diversion signage and allow additional time for your journey.
Full details can be found on the National Highways website which can be found here: https://nationalhighways.co.uk/roads-and-travel/road-projects/east/a47-north-tuddenham-to-easton-improvements/
About the Transformer movements
There have been a total of nine transformer movements since January 2026, and each unit has been transported on a 28-axle girder frame trailer, capable of carrying loads up to 350 tonnes.
The trailer will reach a maximum length of 85 metres, a width of 5.4 metres, and a height of 5.2 metres. Due to these abnormal dimensions, the convoy will travel under full police escort and at a strictly limited speed of no more than 12mph, in accordance with National Highways Special Order legislation.
Movements are further restricted to daytime on Sundays only, which helps reduce traffic impact and maintain safe operating conditions.
Some street furniture, including items such as illuminated bollards and traffic signals, will temporarily be removed from the route to allow the load to pass safely.
These works are carried out in advance wherever possible and reinstated immediately after the convoy has passed. In a small number of cases, temporary replacements may be installed and permanent furniture restored shortly after.
The transport will be powered by two 250-tonne capacity tractor units, with a 4–5 person crew operating the trailer and managing ground safety. Their role includes monitoring tight turns and manoeuvring the equipment safely.
This operation is being delivered in close coordination with Norfolk County Council, Norfolk and Suffolk Police, and National Highways, with significant planning undertaken to limit inconvenience to residents and road users.
Final date of movement
As operations are restricted to Sundays, the nine planned movements have been scheduled between January 2026 and October 2026.
We can confirm the date of the final movement which is:
- Sunday 25th October 2026
Please note that all our works are subject to site and weather conditions and our deliveries are dependent on agreements with Norfolk County Council and Norfolk Constabulary and are subject to change.
